Koi Herpesvirus Disease (KHVD) is a highly contagious viral disease of goldfish and koi that can cause high mortality, especially in young fish, significantly impacting the fisheries sector. The disease is characterized by gill damage, skin lesions, kidney problems, and symptoms such as lethargy, decreased appetite, and abnormal swimming.
Transmission is influenced by water temperature, fish density, and poor aquaculture environment quality. Diagnosis is made through clinical examination and molecular methods such as PCR to confirm the presence of the virus, even in asymptomatic fish. KHVD control efforts require integrated strategies such as biosecurity, quarantine of new fish, environmental management, and vaccination to prevent spread and reduce economic losses.
